Hi there! Nice to meet you! This is Alafair. At the age of 7 months, after struggling with extreme feeding difficulties, never sleeping for more than 45 minutes at time, never allowing either of her parents to set her down, and spending most of her waking time screaming, she was diagnosed with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease and multiple gastrointestinal allergies. Simply put, she was allergic to proteins. (You can read more about that journey here.)
Despite what we read everywhere on the internet--that it's impossible for babies to be allergic to breastmilk--we found ourselves with an infant who was, in fact, allergic to breastmilk. |
About 0.05% of babies fall into this category, so it makes sense why it's so difficult to diagnose. Switching her to a specialized protein-free formula gave us all immediate relief and she suddenly began to thrive. Nonetheless, we found ourselves thrown into an abyss of food trials and specialized diets with very little resources for navigating our new world. It took 7 longs months to reach a diagnosis that set us on a path better health, but we soon realized that was just the beginning.
This website is all about our ongoing journey with food experiments, the pursuit of a path to better health, and creating a positive culture around food under difficult circumstances. It is dedicated to anyone struggling with any kind of food allergies. If you are the parent of an FPIES kid, we hope you can use this site as a resource or make connections with others struggling with the same experiences. We welcome contributions as well, as we are always learning more.
