What is FPIES?
FPIES, or food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, is a rare adverse food reaction involving the immune system that mainly affects infants and young children. It is caused by an allergic reaction to one or more ingested foods which results in inflammation of the small and large intestine.
In short, infants are allergic to protein. That means that no matter what you eliminate from your diet, your infant will still react negatively to breastmilk because ALL foods you eat are converted to protein.
The good news--most kids outgrow the condition by age three.
We can't speak to this personally as we're not there yet. I can say we are having many more food trial successes the older Alafair gets. It also appears she may have some lifelong food allergies such as gluten, soy, and dairy. But...we can't say for sure right now. It should also be noted that Alafair is not technically classified as an FPIES kid. Her medical records all state multiple gastrointestinal allergies and chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease. We follow the FPIES food trials/methods since they still make sense in this case.
